I have heard multiple pronunciations for Gollum's name. Is it pronounced "Goll-um" or "Goll-oom"?

    Question #68775. Asked by ganondorf319. (Jul 25 06 5:28 AM)

    Gnomon

It's pronounced Goll-um. Tolkien was very careful with his spellings. If he had intended -oom, he would have put an accent on it.

I was listening to a sound-recording, and the narrator said it was pronounced "goll-oom". that is why I asked.

There are lots and lots of rumbles going on over various changes in pronunciation. Movie from Book seems to be the biggest culprit.

When you think about it, -um is a more likely pronunciation than -oom. It's a sort of swallowing sound, which -oom isn't. And I agree with Gnomon about Tolkien's spelling. Very precise.

I've only ever heard it pronounced as Goll-um with the accent on the first part. And as it was described as the sound he used to make after he began his nefarious connection with the ring I have always imagined it as said somewhat in the back of the throat sort of as a resentful mutter or growl.

U----------in names like Húrin, Túrin, Túna should be pronounced oo; thus 'Toorin', not 'Tyoorin'
