How many forensic pathologists are there in the United States?

Question #68837. Asked by zbeckabee. (Jul 26 06 11:58 AM)

Around 1,000 are board certified, of which less than 400 practise their calling; or thereabouts.

As of 2003, there were 989 board certified forensic pathologists in the United States. Only about 600 appear to be active practitioners, however, and less than 400 function as full-time dedicated forensic pathologists working within and/or directing statutorily constituted medicolegal death investigation systems. Current estimates are that America needs a workforce of at least 800 full-time board certified forensic pathologists to maintain medicolegal autopsy loads at acceptable levels.
