We don't really know who or what she was. The New Testament contains references to more than one woman named Mary. Luke 7 also refers to an unnamed woman, a "sinner," who anointed Christ's feet with an expensive ointment. Later in Church history, this sinner was conflated with Mary of Magdala and Mary of Bethany, sister of Lazarus.
On the rather confusing (but interesting) history of this figure:
Mary Magdalene is one of the most prominent and misrepresented women in the New Testament. How much do you know about her? Biblical quotations are from the Challoner-Rheims version. Enjoy!
