Summer squashes have a thin skin. Varieties include the yellow "crookneck" squash, which is often called "yellow squash," and zucchini.
Winter varieties have a harder shell. Pumpkins are the best-known winter squash. Other varieties include acorn, butternut, hubbard, turban and "spaghetti" squashes.
