A famous man who had shared a searing experience with this chemist said of him, after his death, that he had actually died of that experience 40 years later. Well known for a striking memoir and for a fascinating book directly inspired by his scientific profession, he was born on this day shortly after World War I. Who was this man, and what are the two books to which I'm referring?

O.K., smartie, I'll give you the Silver Mace. However, the first book I had in mind was "If This Is a Man," (Italian title: Se questo e un uomo), Levi's memoir of his experiences in the Buna work camp at Auschwitz.

The "famous man" who commented on Levi's death was, of course, Elie Wiesel, who was also at Buna.

Primo Levi was born on July 31, 1919.
