What is the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist?

Question #69097. Asked by bojjie. (Jul 31 06 10:56 PM)

The word "Nutritionist" is widely used in health care and health promotion. However, the title "Nutritionist" is not protected by law. This means that it may be used by someone who is not qualified to deliver nutrition information.

Usually Registered Dieticians working in a hospital will have a job title that uses the term "Dietician" and will focus on clinical care of the patient.

Registered Dieticians working in a community setting may use the title "Nutritionist" to distinguish themselves from the hospital role, since they focus on healthy eating and wellness at all stages of the lifecycle.

A nutritionist is a person who advises people on dietary matters relating to health, well-being and optimal nutrition. It should be noted that anyone (whether with or without formal specialised education) can refer to themselves as a nutritionist. There is no regulatory body for nutritionists.

Dietitians are experts in food and nutrition. They help promote good health through proper eating. They also supervise the preparation and service of food, develop modified diets, participate in research, and educate individuals and groups on good nutritional habits. The goals of the dietary department are to obtain, prepare, and serve flavorsome, attractive, and nutritious food to patients, family members, and health care providers.

Nutrition professionals include registered dietitians (RD) and dietetic technician, registered (DTR). Some RDs or DTRs call themselves nutritionists. However, some people who may call themselves a nutritionist are not registered dietitians. Sometimes the word dietitian is spelled as dietician.
