What European country is responsible for the growth of coffee worldwide?

Question #69130. Asked by sheilapec. (Aug 01 06 12:56 PM)

Well, that can be disputed.During the 17th century the Dutch controlled the world trade.Through their commercial dominance they were able to obtain coffee beans from Yemen. They maintained their monopoly only until an emissary from the Ottoman Empire gave the King of France,Louis XIV a coffee tree due to his love of the product.

When French colonists wished to bring coffee to their settlements in America, they took a seed from the Royal Tree and brought it with them. Thus,it is widely believed that most of the coffee produced in the Americas today descended from that one plant. Thus,I would have to say France.

The Dutch and later also the French introduced the coffee plant to Latin America.
