There is no such thing as a "Communist State"; it is an oxymoron. If there were such a thing as a communist society there would be no state because it would no longer have a function.

Some writers argue that the term "Communist state" is an oxymoron. These writers treat the term as synonymous with Communism's theoretical goal of stateless communism, a society that is propertyless, classless, and stateless [1], where everyone works according to their ability and receive according to their need. Marx and Engels's theory does, however, include a transitional phase known as the dictatorship of the proletariat. The Communist state claims to be the practical enactment of this dictatorship of the proletariat.

Someone once said, 'Communism has not been tried and found wanting, Communism has not been tried'.

zbeckabee: that transition period is known as "socialism" and it goes through different stages. Up until now, nobody has managed to get very far, for both internal and external reasons.

Allergic2Life--We have been asked many times NOT to argue on this site so I will aim my post directly at you. You have asked a legitimate question and the term Communist State is correctly applied to Cuba.

Fidel was/is the longest reigning leader of any EXISTING Government.

But not for much longer, perhaps. He's just 'handed over' to his brother for health reasons. Apparently he fainted twice during a seven hour speech. Seven hours!! Who the heck would be listening to that? He's not the longest reigning current Head of State, though. King Bhumipol Adyulyadej has reigned since 1946 and is the longest reigning current Head of State.

I would argue that it is the dead leader of North Korea, Kim Il Sung, who has been worshipped ever since his death in 1994. He ran the country from 1948, meaning he was leader for 48 years.

I wasn't trying to create an argument, by asking a question concerning a Communist state...I meant the same thing as about a Communist country or Communist nation.
It is a interesting point that Catamount shares but not really an excuse to engage in argument.
