The tides are formed from the gravitational pull of the moon and have some affect on the waves, wind and other outside forces contribute. If there is a large storm at sea(tropical depression, hurricane, etc., results in a large wave, at times over 50 feet tall, called a storm surge.

Earthquakes, mass movements above or below water, volcanic eruptions and large meteorite impacts all have the potential to generate a tsunami.

Don't forget the effects of heating by the sun. Heating of the water causes currents which can also produce waves.
