    Are mermaids real?

    Question #69234. Asked by yumchicken.

    No.

A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of a fish. The male version of a mermaid is called a merman.

Most of the reported sightings were from the 17th and 18th century - periods of, relatively, scientific ignorance. I have never heard of a verified sighting in the modern era. Either they have become extinct, or the previous sightings were misinterpretations of other natural phenomenon.

With the saturation of humans into all parts of the globe and the unprecedented presence of human beings on the oceans, you would think there would be an increase in sightings and that they would be verifiable.

No...not convinced. Don't think they exist in other that Disney cartoons.

Just as an aside, I read recently about "sirenomelia," a serious birth defect also known as "mermaid syndrome":

From where I looked, it doesn't say they exist. However, there is a disorder called 'mermaid syndrome' where the legs are stuck together. But other than that, they lack other mermaid characteristics.

In the book "La pelle" (The skin), Curzio Malaparte describes a dinner in Naples for American generals in 1943, and the main dish was a fish taken from Naples Aquarium, since no other type of seafood could be obtained. The fish was described as looking so much like a young girl that everybody refused to eat it. I don't believe that was a mermaid, but can anyone tell me what kind of fish it could have been? Lillo

I don't believe that any specific fish is mentioned or implied. "La Pelle" is largely an extended metaphor for the conflict between the new and old worlds -- innocence and decadence. And in Italian, as in English and French, the word "pelle," meaning "skin," appears in various idioms that describe feelings of nervousness or fear:

They are believed to be real. In Banff, Canada at the Indian trading post, there is a merman on display, this merman was referred to as the Fiji mermaid.
