Normally your blood is circulated through your whole body, much of it flows through your brain and central nervous system, making you feel awake, but after you eat, the blood needs to go to your colon "digestive system" to help power the digestive process, and so less blood gets to your brain. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/?qid=20060724053106AAbz1I1

Your blood sugar goes up!

Blood sugar down makes you feel tired, and if you've had room to eat that much, your blood sugar was probably on the down side. It takes a while for food to be digested and for the sugar levels to rise. (To combat low sugar levels in teens, I always used iron brew and digestive biscuits - sugary fizz for quick absorption and carbohydrate to take them up to lunch time...) In survival terms, a full stomach doesn't make it easy to run around, so the best strategy is to find somewhere comparatively safe and sleep. Lions and other 'big meal' animals do this too.
