The two modems send back and forth signals when connecting to determine the highest speed that the connection can be without an error. Once this has been determined the final connection takes place and the speaker turns off.

I believe the noise is called a "handshake", as one computer "introduces" itself to another.

If you have dial-up, then the modem is dialing into the ISP.

I turn off my modem speakers so I don't have to listen to that noise. I find it extremely annoying.

I am always "on-line" so the noises I hear when opening my Internet Explorer are from my three POPSWATTERS which have an exceptionally high "kill rate." Wham, Bam, Flim, Slap, Blip, Swat!!!

I love that noise! My computer doesn't make them anymore since i got broadband.... damn new technology! although i have to admit i prefer broadband speed-wise!
