How do authors of books know if there is a book just like the one they wrote that they want published?

They don't. Even the most prolific reader can't read everything ever published on the subject they may be writing about--well as far as fiction goes. If it's non-fiction, it's much easier to find out. The best thing to do is write your best book, regardless of subject and then try and find a publisher.
