Although the hits predate 1960 by a few years, this could be Adam Arkin's father, Alan Arkin who was a member of the Tarriers. Their first hit was Cindy, Oh Cindy and the second was the Banana Boat Song. Adam has been on Knott's Landing, Northern Exposure and Chicago Hope, among other television shows. Alan was also an actor and starred in the memorable "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter."

The Highwaymen were a circa 1960 "collegiate folk" group, which originated at Wesleyan University and had a number-one hit in 1961 with "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" and another top-20 hit in 1962 with "Cottonfields". The original members were David Fisher, Steve Trott, Chan Daniels, Steve Butts and Bob Burnett. Later members were Gil Robbins (father of actor Tim Robbins) and classical guitarist, Johann Helton. As of 2004, all but Daniels are still alive. They have played reunion gigs as recently as 2006. 10 albums have been recorded to date.

I think you are right, Zbecka. I forgot about Gil Robbins. The Tarriers were a bit too early to fit the question, and "Cindy" did not reach number one.

Well, McGruff...You were ten steps ahead of me because I had NO clue who Tim Robbins' dad was before I found that link.
