Little is known about this person; we don't even know his name. He is only known to have four works to his name, and apparently comes from Cheshire. Who is he?

    Question #69632. Asked by smartie806.

    gdec1

The "Pearl Poet", or the "Gawain Poet", is the name given to the author of Pearl, an alliterative poem written in Middle English. Its author appears also to have been the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Patience, and Cleanness; some scholars have suggested he may also have composed Saint Erkenwald. Save for the latter (found in BL-MS Harley 2250), all these works are known from a single surviving manuscript, the British Library holding Cotton Nero A x.
All four poems of the Cotton Nero A.x manuscript are in the same Middle English dialect of Cheshire in North-West England.

It was first introduced in New York in the early 60's but never really caught on. The person who concocted the idea seemed to think it would benefit his profession by adding an element of surprise and save a little time and space. The name comes from a combined effort of latin mixed with a slang term used in his job. It even has a Spanish equivalent in which the word is spelt backwards. What is it, and how was it used in a recent parody of a well-known book series?

It is the composer's best-known piece, but it is not typical of him and remained rather obscure until it exploded into popularity in the 1970's. A more celebrated composer used a variation on it in one of his important works, and many modern musicians and songwriters, including Brian Eno, have found it inspirational. You may well be familiar with it, even if you don't know its name, because it is often played at certain special events. What is it?

In 'A Clockwork Orange', when Alex comes home from prison there is a stranger sitting with his parents. What is this person's name, and what is he eating?

He's been described as a dog-headed cannibal, or simply as a particularly tall ogre. The name by which we know him is derived from his actions in the best-known story about him, and although he was demoted, in a sense, back in the 1960's, he still attracts much devotion and affection. Who is he, and can you find a "dog-headed" portrait of him?
