In other cases, promoters have touted the large size of retail areas by combining several distinct entities, such as separate big-box stores, other adjacent stores, and even adjacent shopping centers.
This appears to be the case with the malls at King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, which has sought to establish its place among the largest in the United States. It has been promoted as "the largest shopping complex on the East Coast," "the largest shopping area in the United States," and more recently "the second largest mall in the country." The total retail space at King of Prussia is about 2.7-million square feet, which would seem to make it eligible for a place among the largest malls in the United States. The Directory of Major Malls (2004) lists three adjacent, but separately managed malls at King of Prussia: the Plaza King Mall (1.5-million square feet), the Court of King of Prussia (980,000 square feet), and the Court Pavilion at King of Prussia (194,000 square feet). The total for all three malls encompasses nearly 2.7-million square feet of retail space, which taken together, would place King of Prussia at the top of the list of the largest malls in the US. The official King of Prussia Mall site www.kingofprussiamall.com/), as of June 2006, makes it appear as if the Plaza and the Court are two sections of a single mall, with an implied total retail area of just under 2.5-million square feet.
