I couldn't find the etymology of Goneril. In King Lear Albany says to Goneril:
"Shut your mouth, dame, Or with this paper shall I stop it: Hold, sir: Thou worse than any name, read thine own evil"
Yet this can't be the origin of the term. The only possibility - and I still think it's highly unlikely - would be that Shakepeare intended a pun on Goneril / Gomeril (Old Scots for a fool, a simpleton.)

I don't know if this has any relationship to that name, but I found this page when I typed in 'Goneril'.
Maybe it's an alternate form? I dunno. Anyways check it out, though!
