Why is the following sentence considered grammatically correct when the subject does not agree with the conjugated form of the verb: I wish I were rich?

In other words, the subject does agree with the verb conjugation, because the statement is contrary to fact. The speaker or writer is not rich but is merely wishing to be so. In such a case, the subjunctive mood must be used.
