Why does John, the author of Revelation, at one point in the last book of the New Testament sob uncontrollably?

Eventually the silence is broken by sobs and tears. John tells us, "I began to weep greatly because nobody was found". Finally one of the elders speaks, 'The Lion that is from Judah, the Root of David, He has overcome. He is able to open the book and break the seven seals.'
