Good tries there zbee, but it's a 'main' character, from a sitcom. The mineral is also a birthstone, and I guess you know by now, the answer is not quite as straight-forward as it seems.

Ok, perhaps it was a little vague, so here's another clue:
The mineral's name derives from a combination of an Arabic and Persian combination depicting colour variations.

Uggggh. One too many combinations there, but while I'm here I'll add that this character had a son who lived with someone who shared a name with a Roman King.

I was thinking Garnet - as in Alf Garnet from 'Till Death Do Us Part. Very popluar in the UK in the 70's, but I thought he had a daughter not a son??

Yellow zircon is called hyacinth, from a word of East Indian origin; in the Middle Ages all yellow stones of East Indian origin were called hyacinth, but today this term is restricted to the yellow zircons.
Hyacinth Bucket is the main character in the successful BBC sitcom, Keeping Up Appearances
One of the most famous gags is Hyacinth receiving phone calls from her son Sheridan, who is away at university with his roommate Tarquin.
Tarquin may mean either of two kings of ancient Rome.
Thanks, peasy, for beating us over the head with clues.
