Most species of moth are nocturnal (a nocturnal animal is one that sleeps during the day and is active at night,) but there are crepuscular and diurnal (a diurnal animal is an animal that is active during the daytime and sleeps during the night.) species.
Crepuscular is a term used to describe animals that are primarily active during the twilight. The pattern of activity is thought to represent a response to selection from predators. Many predators forage most intensely at night, while others are active at midday and see best in full sun. Thus the crepuscular habit may reduce predation. Additionally, in hot areas, it may be a way of avoiding thermal stress while capitalizing on the light available.

THere are plenty of moths that do come out during the day, such as the Burnet moth and the Cinnabar moth. They are usually brightly coloured and you may mistake them for butterflies.
