"Teen Talk Barbie", a talking version of the doll. It spoke a number of phrases such as, "Will we ever have enough clothes?", "I love shopping!", and "Wanna have a pizza party?" Each doll was programmed to say four out of 270 possible phrases, so chances were good that no two dolls owned by a girl or her friends would be exactly the same. One of these 270 phrases was "Math class is tough!" Although only about 1.5% of all the dolls sold said the phrase, it caused public outcry.

"Pregnant Midge?" That's a new one on me.
If you ask me, these dolls should have been controversial from the beginning. My only Barbie was one I like to describe as the "Irma la Douce" model, since she looked like something that would have been picking up sailors in Marseilles in the early 1960's: navy pencil-skirt, red-and-white striped top, high-heeled mules, and platinum bouffant hairstyle. All she needed was a long cigarette holder and an Edith Piaf soundtrack. I can't imagine who designed her.

Oh my...and she was even married before she got pregnant!
The pregnant version of Midge, Barbie's oldest friend, which pops out a curled-up baby when her belly is opened, is seen on Tuesday in Philadelphia. The doll, which some parents think is a little too real for their children, has been pulled from Wal-Mart shelves across the country following complaints from customers

There was also the Butterfly Tattooed Barbie that caused a stir among parents.
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Mattel, Inc. announced today that they have not removed the Butterfly Art Barbie(R) doll from retail shelves as has been mistakenly reported over the past week. The Barbie doll, which features washable butterfly and flower body art, and friends are still available at retail outlets that carry Barbie dolls.
SOURCE Mattel, Inc.
By June 25, 1999 production of the Butterfly Art line was stopped. Why? A few angered parents thought the tattoos that were displayed on the doll gave the wrong impression. "Barbie with tattoos was just too edgy for some. Several complaints, maybe a dozen or so, about last year's Butterfly Art Barbie...also created changes in the Generation Girl line dealing with body piercing." bakersfield.com - News
