Some ingredients include minerals such as antimonite or a type of lead ore mixed with ripened ovules. Mothers once made this potion for their newborns to ward against a certain 'emotion' that is mentioned in religious traditions and also by Shakespeare in 'The Moore of Venice'. What is it, what is it supposed to ward off, and how would Frankie, zbee and I use it today?

    Question #70144. Asked by peasypod.

Well, I don't know about you and zbeck, but I would use it as mascara or eyeliner. Because the answer is kohl. (Actually, I think I'll stick with the commercial preparations, since the traditional recipes might well ruin my eyesight.)

Used around the eyes of infants, kohl was supposed to ward off the envious "evil eye."

EXCELLENT job lanfranco...and I'm with you on remaining true to the traditional mascara and eyeliner. Applying "evil eye potion" while driving and talking on a cell phone just does not sound all that easy.

Well done Frankiebabe, and I was just waiting for someone to correct me on the Moore/Merchant edition too, but my subtle plan sorta went over everyones head, I see. Of course the 'green with envy' bit was in Othello.

Zbee, as often as I try, I just can't get to mastering the cell phone/lippy application technique yet, so I'll just have to moot the eye liner for a bit...besides, I'm just a mascara gal, anyway.

Peasy, dear, I figured immediately that you meant "Othello" (the subtitle of which, after all, is "The Moor of Venice," with all of its envy/jealousy themes), so that the "Merchant just didn't figure in.

Oh, yes, I knew straight away that you would get it!

I was just waiting for some 'drifter' to take a shot at it, like they do sometimes. ;)

I would appreciate it if somone could help me out on this one. I vaguely recall reading an article which describes how a ship used a concentrated volume of sound to ward off some pirates which were attempting to illegally board the ship, and in so doing so successfully fended the pirates off by causing them to become disorientated. What was this new technique called and how was it so effective?
