Why was Raymond Chandler's 1954 novel "The Long Goodbye" entitled like that?

Question #70188. Asked by karshook. (Aug 29 06 5:12 AM)

Probably several reasons: You are led to believe the character "Lennox" dies early in the book, however, he is still very much alive. Probably more to the point, Chandler used the novel, which he wrote as his wife lay dying, to analyze and comment on his own life. I would suggest the title comes from the marriage of these situations.

'The Long Goodbye'was his longest and literarily most ambitious, also his most autobiographical novel. In the same year, his wife, Cissy died at the age of 84. Until his own death in 1959, Chandler was almost continuously drunk.
