    Question #70264. ganondorf319 asks:

What happened to the Dark Lord Morgoth in 'The Lord of the Rings' that made Sauron the Dark Lord?

During the ensuing War of Wrath, Beleriand and much of the north of Middle-earth was again destroyed / reshaped, yet Morgoth was utterly defeated. He was bound once again with the chain Angainor and he was led to the judgement of the gods. This time, his punishment was final. Melkor’s / Morgoth’s fëa (“spirit”, as in “Fëanor” – “spirit of fire”) was shut outside the Door of Night forever. He is unable to return until the rumoured Final Battle, when he will reënter Eä, destroy the Sun and the Moon, and with his followers fight a united army of Ainur, Elves and Men, where Melkor must stand alone against the two most deserving of his foes, Fingulfin and Turin. Despite his absence until the End Time, Morgoth’s evil remains as “Arda Marred”, and his will walks yet with the feet of the living.

    Maedhros

He was cast into a timeless void.

Morgoth was the principal agent of evil during the time of The Silmarillion, and his influence lingers in the world even after he was cast from the world into the outer void. Morgoth's example provided later ages a cautionary tale against pride, wrath, envy, lust for power, and greed — and the destruction these visit upon oneself and others.

Finally, in the War of Wrath, Angband was destroyed and, though Morgoth tried to call up more and more beasts of the shadows to aid him, he was sent into the Void by the Valar. Although he could not escape and return to conquer Middle-earth, he left his lieutenant and ally behind, Sauron.

The Void was an area beyond Arda and the world, which may have been the equivalent to space or the universe. According to the Ainulindalë, Ilúvatar, the All-father emerged out of the Void and created the Timeless Halls, which seems to be seperate from the Void. It is believed that many creatures evolved in the Void due to the discords in the Music of the Ainur caused by Melkor. Ungoliant may even have been one of these creatures. Later, after his defeat in the War of Wrath, Morgoth was cast out into the Void, but legends predict that he will return to the World before its end.
