What is the best way to tell if your participle is dangling?

Just ask whether the participle modifies the noun that begins the next clause.
Yes: "Walking into the store, Mary began to choose what to buy."
No: "Walking into the store, the bananas looked rotten."
Obviously, the bananas were not walking into the store. Not unless your bananas are quite different from the ones I encounter.

That's right, some bananas just aren't what they seem. But, like Frankie says, a good way is to put the clause with the participle right after the subject of the sentence.
