When the Exposition finished it was moved to St Louis. It was destroyed by dynamite in May 1906 and sold as scrap for $1,800.

You got it gtho4!! The invention brought George Ferris both fame and financial ruin! The wheeel was dismantled after the fair and rebuilt for the 1904 St. Louisiana Purchase Exposition. In 1906, heeding public outcry against the metal eyesore, wreckers detonated a hundred pounds of dynamite that knocked it to the ground!

It was built not too far from my home, as a matter of fact.

An interesting account of that Ferris Wheel and the great Columbian Exposition can be found in Erik Larson's bestselling book, "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America" (2003).

Are you thinking of Edward Watkin's Wembley Tower? He was hoping to eclipse the Eiffel Tower with his own, but construction was never completed and the partially built tower was later dissembled.
