The children of this family, all boys, were well known at their time as the inspiration of a famous work, and (most of them) were portrayed in a recent movie. Three of them met untimely deaths. What family is this, who were the three, how did they die, and what was the work?

The Llewelyn-Davies family inspired Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. According to Wikipedia, of their five sons, one was killed in WWI, one drowned at 21 (possibly in a suicide pact with a gay lover) and Peter jumped in front of a train at the age of 63.

I was taught that the story of Peter Pan was inspired by the fact that J.M. Barries brother died when he was just a child, and consequently Barrie felt like he could never grow up because he had to be the son his mother lost. That was what my Children's Lit teacher taught us in college at any rate.

It is the Llewelyn-Davies family. They were the main basis of the story, but it is possible Barrie's brother had some influence. The story of the Llewelyn-Davies and Barrie was portrayed (Somewhat fictionalized) in "Finding Neverland."

Title: JM Barrie and the Lost Boys
As the title suggests, the book is not only a biography of Scottish playwright and novelist J. M. Barrie, but of the Llewelyn Davies family, whose five sons, with Barrie's dead brother, David, inspired the creation Peter Pan, one of Western literature's most enduring and suitably timeless figures.
