    Which Caribbean islands once belonged to Spain?

    Although Spain claimed the entire Caribbean, they settled only the larger islands of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica and Trinidad.

    Though never permanently settled by Spain, the Bahamas was actually a Spanish colony for one year, in 1782.

    In addition to Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Trinidad the Spanish had small settlements on other islands, such as Antigua.
