I'm thinking this would be the same for any organization designed to help people to help themselves to a better life, whether it be alcohol abuse, or narcotics---A desire to stop their habit.

The only requirment for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions.

You have to have a drinking problem (serious or not serious).

The most important requirement:
You must admit that you are an alcoholic!
That's the first step in getting help. Many alcoholics think they can quit drinking whenever they get ready. Sadly, that isn't the case. Most will not admit they have a problem. So admitting and recognizing they have a problem is the most crucial step one can take in getting help with AA.

Lilady:
You must admit you are alcoholic is not a requirement for membership. There is but one requirment and that is, "a desire to stop drinking."
Admitting you are powerless over alcohol (admitting being an alcoholic) and your life has become unmanagable is the first step of the twelve steps.

Admitting one is an alcoholic is only the beginning of the First Step. Admitting that life has become unmanageable is
the true beginning of making a change.
Many persons can not get sober or stay sober because they have never truly believed that their life, under the influence, stinks.
