There is a prominent worldwide geographic variability of GBC incidence (Fig. 2), which correlates with the prevalence of cholelithiasis. The highest incidence rates of GBC (up to 7.5 per 100,000 for men and 23 per 100,000 for women) are found among populations living in the western parts of the Andes, and in North-American Indians, Mexican Americans and inhabitants of northern India.
Of considerable interest, all of the indigenous Indian populations of the Americas that have been studied have very high rates of GBC.

Gall bladder cancer and bile duct cancers are relatively rare in the United States. When they do occur, these cancers of the biliary tract affect a disproportionate number of American Indians, Alaska natives and Hispanics, who may have rates five times that of whites. This may be the result of genetic propensity to gallstones, one of the leading causes of gallbladder cancer.
