The first U.S. president to ride in an automobile was Theodore Roosevelt. He rode in a purple-lined Columbia Electric Victoria through Hartford, Conn. on Aug. 22, 1902. Twenty carriages followed the president's car. He also became the first president to own a car.
Roosevelt was also the first president to ride in an airplane, a Wright biplane Oct. 11, 1910 in St. Louis, Mo.. Archibald Hoxey was the pilot.
As time went on and automobiles became more common, there was need of a place to store the cars. In 1909, President William Howard Taft converted the White House stables into a four-car garage.
