When did pop 'groups' become known as 'bands', and why?

This is what Wikipedia says. Pop group A band or other musical ensemble that makes or performs pop music, such as a boy band. Band (music) In music, a band is a company of musicians, or musical ensemble, usually popular or folk, playing parts of or improvising a musical arrangement on different musical instruments. I'm not entirely convinced by this, BB. The Beatles were (in GB at least) always known as a pop group, never as a band, and I think they played their own instruments. Sep 24 06, 5:50 PM
