Was it ever illegal to drink alcohol in the United States?

    Question #70980. Asked by skysmom65. (Sep 25 06 10:28 AM)

    What-A-Mess

It was never illegal to "drink" alcohol if one was of age, but it was illegal to sell, manufacture, distribute or import alcoholic beverages in the era of Prohibition.

From 1920 to 1933, the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcohol was prohibited in the United States. The possession or consumption of alcohol was not prohibited.

    Today:

There are numerous "dry" counties or towns where no liquor is sold; even so liquor can be brought in for private consumption. It was never illegal to drink liquor in the United States.

I just read that Connecticut and Rhode Island never ratified the 18th Amendment, Prohibition. So if it was illegal to drink in the U.S. at that time, does it mean that in those two states they were allowed to consume alcoholic beverages?
