Certain head-gear of a well known Head of State has been acknowledged (by way of myth or otherwise) by religious outfits to somehow represent a controversial evil character by calculating letters of a Latin phrase associated with it. What is it, who wears it, what is the phrase, and which country's flag is it found on?

    Question #71039. Asked by peasypod.

    lanfranco

This would be the Papal Tiara, the supposed letters (Vicarius Filii Dei) on which -- or on one example -- are said by some to add up, in equivalent Latin numerals, to 666. The flag is the Vatican's.

Sigh. Some people obviously don't have enough to do with their time.

Well, there's the fact that it's square. Also, they fool around with the keys depending on what the flag is supposed to be representing -- the State or the Church.

Er, is that "sprinkles" reference supposed to be significant in any way?

This mysterious organization, associated with a certain flower and a religious symbol, supposedly began in the 15th century and experienced a resurgence in the 17th. Some scholars suspect it was originally a hoax, but it's said to be connected with Gnosticism, Egyptian mysteries, alchemy, Islam, and Freemasonry, as well as Christianity, and has spawned various modern incarnations. What is this hermetic order?

This work of literature has been translated from Latin and was written almost half a century after the main storyteller's death. Although rather sketchy, it holds accounts of a famous adventure, which some believe the sea-dweller discovered a well known place nearly a thousand years before a well known explorer. Involving a big fish and a crystal tower, what was the name of this publication, and who was the main protagonist?

Prevalent among military and certain science branches, it has adaptations for women and for the French. Named after the famous wife (who is mentioned in a well known survey mastered for William the Conqueror) of an Earl during the Cnut reign, its name has connotations to religious bearings, however the mention of Elvis dimishes that notion. What is it, who is it named after, and what was the well known survey?

According to somewhat apocryphal documentation, it has been claimed that a certain well known large mode of transport was originally mis-named due to some 'flowery language' with a company spokesperson trying to gain permission from a passionate monarch. A mis-understanding led to an embarrassing settlement in which it is named today. What is it, and who was it supposed to be named after?
