Fingernails run across a chalkboard cause an unusual, and perhaps involuntary, shuddering or unease, sometimes felt right down the spine. Personally, I experience this feeling even thinking about it, and call it the "chalkboard feeling". What specifically causes this reaction, and is there a scientific or medical name for it?

The sound caused by scraping fingernails across a chaulkboard is a particularly unpleasant sound for humans.
As to your reaction just by the thought, it seems to be a mental reaction to the memory of the sound.

Yes, but why does the sound trigger a weird tingling down the spine? Very few sounds themselves would cause such a reaction.
