What is the difference between HD and HD ready?

Question #71163. Asked by darkpresence. (Oct 03 06 3:58 PM)

HD-Ready sets have a HDTV receiver/decoder built-in, while HD-Capable sets simply act as a monitor and require the addition of an external receiver/decoder to receive high-definition signals. Since most HD-Ready sets only include receivers for off-air broadcasts (i.e. signals that are received using an antenna), you will still need a separate HD converter to view HD programs on GCI Cable.

I have a question between HD Ready and HDTV, originally I was thinkg the image quality of a HD Ready will be equal to HDTV after a HD turner/receiver was installed. However, my local cable tv provider (Charter) told me that HD Ready boots at max 60% of the quality as the HDTV and an HDTV and HD Ready are ready to go with the cable provider's HD receiver. Is that true?
