Traditionally considered to be the founder of a great state following a storied rape, this anti-monarchist is also said to have ordered the execution of his own relatives when they threatened to betray his achievement. This latter episode was represented in a famous painting by an artist who had political reasons for being drawn to it. Who was this man, who was raped, what is the painting, and can you provide an illustration of it?

    Question #71180. Asked by lanfranco.

The woman was Lucretia, and she was raped by Sextus Tarquinius, the son of Tarquinius Superbus, seventh and last king of Rome. The man was Lucius Junius Brutus, whose father had been killed by the king. After the republic had been established with Brutus as one of the consuls, Brutus’ two sons Titus and Tiberius sided with the Tarquins in their attempt to regain the throne. The sons were tried and convicted before Brutus and he duly ordered their execution.

The painting is by Jacques-Louis David – “The Lictors bring to Brutus the Bodies of his Sons”

What is it, and can you provide an illustration?

And who, by the way, was raped?

The best-known work of its creator, of whom it includes a self-portrait, this canvas was called "the theology of painting" by one artist and "the philosophy of art" by another. It was reinterpreted by the most famous artist of the 20th century, and its precise meaning has been endlessly debated. Today, it hangs in a great museum in the city in which it was made. What is it, who painted it, and who reinterpreted it? (Please provide an illustration.)

It is said that in the 18th century, two well-known artists engaged in a dispute over whether it was possible to produce a successful painting that employed a certain color as its dominant chromatic theme.
