This is a quite controversial subject, and "Newsweek"'s list of 2005, which involved only public (that is, state-supported schools, for those of you in the U.K.) has been disputed. Among educators, this controversy is second only to "U.S. News and World Report"'s annual ranking of U.S. universities.
For example, I'd put New Trier High School in Illinois near the top of the list, because my experience with New Trier graduates has been stunningly positive. But it was ranked only 293 on "Newsweek"'s list:
