A place of great importance has just become non-existant, where was it?

Is it Pluto? Formerly the final planet in our solar system, but defrocked (if that's the term) last month by a bunch of scientists becuase apparently it doesn't meet the criteria for a planet?

I wouldn't exactly describe Pluto as being of great importance - except for its influence on the orbits of the stuff around it - and anyway, it's still there and existing. I can't think of many places that have ceased to exist (rather than suffering a name change) in comparatively recent times - unless Surtsey's gone. And that's only of great importance to scientists investigation colonisation and erosion.

This place, once a "seeing place," has seen it all: first a stronghold, it's been a walking place, a drinking place, a disbarking place, a swimming place (but not for people), a singing place, and now an embarking place. Oddly enough, never a drumming place, though virtually in a former shooting place that still retains the name. Named for a politician, then renamed horticulturally, it's again named for the politician, no relation to other more recent ones of the same name. Where in the United States is it?

The first official staging of this colorful celebration took place in a year and a city of great patriotic significance in the U.S., and it is still among that city's most famous holiday traditions. Much influenced by customs borrowed from the U.K. and Scandinavia, the event has often been compared with another that takes place later in the year in another U.S. urban center. What is it?
