In what Broadway musical is there a scene where two fathers, who want their son and daughter to marry, make arrangements with a third character for him to stage an attempted rape of the daughter so the son will come to her rescue, become her hero, and the two will live happily ever-after? What is the name of the musical and the name of this third character?

If you're thinking of "The Fantasticks", that seems to fit the bill perfectly, only it was never a Broadway musical. (In fact, it held the record for the longest running off-Broadway musical until it closed in 2000.) The name of the star, the third character, is El Gallo, originally played by Jerry Orbach.

That's it! And, my mistake, it WAS off-Broadway. One of the songs from that play "Try To Remember" has been sung out of play context over and over again by different artists (and scads of piano lounge singers).

Why did the kids put beans in their ears?
No one can hear with beans in their ears.
After a while the reason appears,
They did it 'cause we said No!
That was my favorite lyric (and rest in peace, El Gallo.)
