It was Friday the 13th when the Knights Templar were arrested and murdered en-mass at the order of King Philip IV of France, which is generally held to be the reasoning behind the day being unlucky.
Some other sources say that the last supper was held on a Friday and there were thirteen people present just before Jesus was arrested, hence it being an unlucky day.

Didn't extinguish the Knights Templar entirely though ... they still exist today.

They may not have been completely extinguished, but they were pretty close to it.

To extinguish any group of common goal persons, one must extinguish the Ideology. Unless this is accomplished, others will pick up and continue toward the goal even more fervently in the name of the Martyrs.
Just look at ANY Religion or Social Reform movement for examples.
