Celtic legends: Cuchulainn. When the men of Ulster were "in their pangs" Cuchulainn defended the province against Maeve's invading army. What were the "pangs" the men were in, why were they in them, and why did this not affect Cuchulainn?

The pangs were a curse that used to come over the Men of Ulster once a month, because they had ridiculed a pregnant woman while she was giving birth. Every adult man in Ulster used to suffer terrible pains and was totally incapable of defending the land against invaders. Cuchulainn didn't suffer from them, because he was too young to be officially considered an adult.

Setanta, aka Cuchulainn, was immune to the Pangs - as was his father. There are a couple of possibilities. One is that he was not a full Ulsterman - his father may have been from somewhere in Alba (Great Britain). Another is because he was the offspring of a deity - Lugh.
