I just passed a building with the words 'Masonic Temple' on the outside. Is this a real temple or just a meeting place for Masons?

I depends what your definition of a temple is. A masonic temple is not a place of worship as with a traditional Greek or Reformed religion temple. It is a place to meet, conduct traditional ceremonies and discuss. But masons want to call that type of place a temple. The church of Scientology is not really a church, is it, yet they call it that way.

I agree with jsbach on his definition of the masonic temple, my reason is, my dad was a 32 degree mason before he passed away. To become a 33 degree mason, you had to go to scotland, and believe me it cost money for the trip!
