    Who is the earliest known artist to sign his work?

    A substantial number of Greek vase painters and potters signed their work, indicating that they considered it to be of artistic value -- and also, probably, as a form of advertisement. On the site below, you will see one of the oldest of these signatures, dating to the 8th century BCE. The verb "epoiesen" may mean simply that the maker potted the vase, but it may also mean that he painted it. It's not always clear:
