Bandleader Guy Lombardo popularized the association of the song with New Year’s celebrations, through his annual broadcasts on radio and TV, beginning in 1929.
However, he did not invent or first introduce the custom.
The ProQuest newspaper archive has articles going back to 1896 that describe revellers on both sides of the Atlantic singing the song to usher in the New Year.

More interesting "Auld Lang Syne" stuff.......
The first two lines of the lyrics are an allusion (perhaps not consciously intended) to Isaiah 65:17, which reads:
Behold, I will create
new heavens and a new earth.
The former things will not be remembered,
nor will they come to mind.
