If Miller equals Watson, who equals Holmes?

    Question #71624. Asked by Baloo55th.

    beaniegirl61

Joseph Bell, 1837-1911. If I knew how to post the website I would.

Nope, anyway. BUT - beanie, you're partly on the right track. Nice bit of work there. You've got the right Watson, at least.... Reread the question - If Miller = Watson, who = Holmes? A warning - this isn't an easy one. Clue time. Totally literary on both sides of the equations. And a Churchillian dog might give an indirect clue to an author..... This mightn't be the site you wanted to post, but it does the same job - http://www.icons.org.uk/theicons/collection/sherlock-holmes/biography/the-model-for-sherlock-holmes

Sorry Baloo but Joseph Bell WAS the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes.

I didn't deny it, beanie. But that's not what I asked.... What you're looking for (I hope!) is a fictional character to complete two equations of fictional characters. The Churchillian dog should take you to the author (not Conan Doyle - the other one) and a Pilgrim Father should help get the result I want.....

Clue time again. The author of the character I'm looking for is best known for another character (which is where the dog comes in) - who is far better known than the author himself. And those who know who wrote these books mostly know his pen name rather than his real name. (The Pilgrim Father from the other clue had a good name for someone who went a long way....)

Ye gods, I'd forgotten this one! No, sorry, had too good an evening to spell your name. There's an indefinite but fairly long distance involved in the name that's sought, or possibly a Roman soldier.....

I don't remember this question, and now I'm in the odd position of thinking I know the answer yet knowing I don't know the question.

Anyway, Miles Standish must have something to do with this. And maybe a bulldog?

Actually, I got the last clue slightly wrong, but you've found the founding father which givesa very good link to the character sought.. The bulldog gives a clue to another character by the author in question. Keep digging, folks. (That's another clue to the author....)

So, you want something along these lines?

As Hatch is to Watson, Van Dusen is to Holmes.

(Still not sure of the question.)

    Along those lines.

    Ronald Standish.

    http://gadetection.pbwiki.com/Ronald+Standish

Herman Cyril McNeile, writing under the pseudonym "Sapper," created the Bulldog Drummond detective stories. He later wrote "Ask for Ronald Standish," a collection of mystery stories about the fictitious sleuth Ronald Standish as told by his equally fictitious sidekick, Bob Miller.

Baloo has possibly read and enjoyed this obscure volume.

Yay!!!!!! Baloo does indeed have this book in his collection, and while the detection is not in the Sherlock Holmes league it is very readable. More brain power involved than in the Bulldog Drummond stories, which were far more popular and were even continued by Gerald Fairlie and possibly others. Well done, Qp. Not an easy one.
