In the past century, the world has lost three of the eight tiger subspecies. The Bali, Caspian and Javan tigers have all become extinct, and the South China tiger faces the same fate.

    Not extinct - yet:

    Indo-Chinese tiger
    South China tiger
    Amur (Siberian) tiger
    Sumatran tiger
    Bengal tiger

Sabertooth Tiger: Extinct - not coming back (no matter how much scientists may want to try to via cloning).

Bali, Javan, and Caspian Tigers: Extinct

    Sumatran Tiger: Endangered
    South China Tiger: Endangered
    Indochinese Tiger: Endangered
    Golden Tabby Tiger: Endangered
    Siberian Tiger: Endangered
Bengal Tiger: Alive - probably headed for the endangered list soon.

Siberian Tigers are endangered in the wild. Only about 350 - 420 survive in the wild (perhaps as few as 200), and 1,000 live in zoos around the world.

The only species of tiger still alive is Panther tigris. The Amur, Bengal, Indochinese, South China, Malayan and Sumatran tigers are sub-species. Of these, as Brainybonde says, the Amur is endangered, and the rest are not plentiful, apart from the South China which is probably extinct like the Bali, Java and Caspian tigers. The sabre-tooth is not actually a tiger in the genus Panther, but in fact a Smilodon and only shares a distant ancestry with the modern tiger.
