"It baint all beer and skittles," remarked a character in a novel I was reading. Now what, exactly, might this colorful expression mean?

    Question #71789. Asked by lanfranco.

I'm thinking this is George DuMaurier's "It ain't all beer and skittles", which is an English adage that means life isn't all about pleasure.

Indeed, peasy, and you get another Silver Mace. (You must be hard put to find storage room, but then the Golden Bananas are really piling up around here.)

For an interesting discussion of forms of the verb "to be," of which "baint" is one, see Q#56496. The novel I was reading is set in early 20th-century Devon.

I see you're setting me up for a delicious rejoinder with that remark, and it's ever so tempting. I'll behave myself, though.

    Really? How disappointing.
