Asta (born Skippy) was a Wire-Haired Fox Terrier best known for his acting work in the 1934 screwball comedy The Thin Man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asta http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asta Rin Tin Tin was prior to Asta by about 10 years but certainly qualifies as "before Lassie".
